When I was eight years old, I had a very specific afternoon routine.

There was a maple tree next to the pond at my grandmother's house near the beach in New Jersey. In spring, it dropped whirligig seeds that spun down through the air and landed everywhere. I loved that tree. I used to climb up to a sturdy branch, settle in with a library book and a snack, and just stay there.

What an Eight-Year-Old Knew About Getting It Right

Nobody told me that was the right thing to do for me. It was exactly right because it was exactly mine.

I didn't choose that tree because someone recommended it. I chose it because something in me knew. The height. The view of the pond. The specific branch that was wide enough to sit on comfortably. The combination of that book, that snack, that particular light coming through the leaves. All of it together. Custom. Precise. Mine.

I have thought about that tree many times over the years.

Because what I do now is exactly that. Not for afternoons, but for health.
