Spring is arriving, the bright yellow forsythia is starting to appear, and adventure is in the air. The spring equinox is my personal green light to go. How about you? </p> <p> Whether or not you feel it, your body knows it’s time for spring cleaning. You already know that I’m not a fan of intense detoxes. I like simple things that you can incorporate into your regular life. Here are some of my favorites. Pick a few and try them out. This is not meant to be a checklist, but rather an invitation of options. </p> <p> <strong>High Energy Practices:</strong> </p> <ul> <li> Morning sunlight to reset your circadian rhythm. If you have trouble with sleep, this is one for you to consider. Get some time outside without sunglasses first thing in the morning. It’s healing for your eyes and it’s so invigorating. </li> <li> Dry brushing before showering to stimulate lymphatic flow. Dry brushing also removes dead and dry skin from winter. </li> <li> Contrast hydrotherapy (alternating hot and cold water) to boost circulation. Try cool water, not cold, for 30 seconds. If you can, alternate three times between warm and cool, ending on cool. Otherwise once is great. See if you can gradually move from cool to cold. This is a hard one for me, and I stick to cool, not cold, in the shower. </li> <li> Digital time-outs. There are many ways to do this. I stop electronics 1-2 hours before bed, and no electronics in the bedroom. I also have a switch on the wi-fi, and it gets turned off every night. </li> </ul> <p> <strong>Spring Cleansing Foods:</strong> </p> <ul> <li> Dandelion greens. I love dandelions, and seeing them makes me so happy. The leaves are a powerhouse support for your liver. Any bitter greens will do, but cultivated dandelion is easy to get. </li> <li> Nettle tea. I suggest adding nettle to your favorite herbal tea blend or drink it on its own. Nettle is rich in minerals and natural antihistamine properties. </li> <li> Asparagus. Spring is all about asparagus! It’s my favorite spring find at farmers markets. Asparagus is supportive for your kidneys. </li> <li> Lemon in warm water. This is a great morning cleansing ritual to start the day. </li> </ul> <p> <strong>Movement Practices:</strong> </p> <ul> <li> Rebounding on mini-trampoline. This is so much fun! I bounce after lymph tapping nearly every morning, and it’s a great way to wake up and start smiling. </li> <li> Gentle twisting yoga poses. There’s lying down, seated, and standing twists, depending on what you feel like. They get your spine and internal organs moving. I like walking our dog, Hazel, while listening to the noisy springtime birds and checking out the progress of the buds on the trees. </li> <li> Breathwork. They’re desperate and willing to try anything to avoid a health catastrophe. </p> <p> They tell me that they’ve had symptoms for years, with a wait and see approach from the traditional system. In each case, when things got really uncomfortable, then they started hitting the specialist circuit. </p> <p> By the time that those in health crisis are talking to me, they’ve got diagnoses, blood tests, and imaging. And, they are full of fear because of hurtful phrases like “permanent damage” and “low prognosis of recovery.” </p> <p> So when I tell them, “Your body wants to heal,” it can be too big of a concept. They have a hard time believing me. </p> <p> Here’s the disconnect: traditional approaches look at the functionality of one organ or system. It’s an input – output model. But that’s not how your body works. Your body remembers and contains everything that you’ve ever eaten, been exposed to, watched, read, felt, experienced – all the good things and the not-so-good ones, too. When you start healing your whole body in its entirety, like with a method such as <a href="https://www.yourhealthwithbeth.com/easy-heal-yourself-now-program" target="_blank"><strong>bioenergetics</strong></a>, the ailing organ improves too. </p> <p> Sometime, those in health crisis prefer their specialist’s advice over mine. The specialist blames their body for underperforming or not functioning. All, or most, responsibility is removed. </p> <p> To get through a health crisis, you’ll need to take responsibility. My approach involves: </p> <ul> <li> Finding what’s out of balance and addressing with remedies that help you, both physically and emotionally </li> <li> Making sure that you’ve got the best nutrition that your body is asking for to build new functionality </li> <li> Supporting you with getting the waste out so that your body isn’t burdened by garbage </li> <li> Releasing trapped emotions so that areas of weakness can heal faster </li> </ul> <p> My approach isn’t for everyone, and that’s OK with me. People told us, “You look like twins!” We thought it was hilarious. My sister is one year younger, and we did not think that we looked anything alike. She has blond, curly hair (now natural white) and blue eyes, and I was a brunette with hazel eyes. I read books in my favorite tree, and my sister was singing and dancing at play practice. </p> <p> We have the same parents, similar character traits of compassion and enthusiasm, but expressed in very different ways. Our bodies are different in more ways than just eye color, including food preferences, environmental sensitivities, and emotional patterns. One of us had a trapped emotion, which was released, that was inherited from a grandparent, and the other did not. We each have different health weaknesses and health strengths. </p> <p> When I work with your <a href="https://www.yourhealthwithbeth.com/easy-heal-yourself-now-program" target="_blank"><strong>bioenergetics</strong></a>, it is unique and specific to you. Traditional protocols typically use patterns. If you have this symptom, then try this approach, or usually, take this medication. I love herbalists and functional and integrative practitioners, but sometimes, it’s the same thing: for this symptom, take these supplements. If my sister and I showed up at a practitioner’s office with the same health issue, we might be given the same treatment. Nor am I a plane or a train or bus!”&nbsp;You are pretty clever, so maybe you’ve got this, and you really do know that you’re not a car. </p> <p style="margin-bottom: 1em;"> Why do they think they are cars? Because most people think of their bodies as mechanical objects, just like a car. </p> <ul> <li> Fuel – if you’re a car, food is just fuel, made of protein, fat, and carbohydrates </li> <li> Maintenance – just like a car, you might think you need a tune-up, which might focus on one symptom or one test to check for one thing </li> <li> Wear and tear – just like you replace brakes and tires, maybe you think replacing joints is inevitable </li> </ul> <p> With this viewpoint, it’s all too easy to see your body as a collection of parts. When something isn’t working, it’s tempting to focus on that one specific body part. </p> <p> Here’s what I think: <strong>your body is a battery</strong>. </p> <p> You’re a wonderfully complicated electrical battery. You’re made of mostly water with sodium and potassium creating electrical gradients across all of your cell membranes so that you can function. </p> <p> The pH in your body is a measure of your voltage, with the hydrogen ion concentration corresponding to electrical potential. Your body strives to maintain pH and cellular voltage in an ideal range for your best health. </p> <p style="margin-bottom: 1em;"> There are so many fantastic ways to recharge your body battery. Since you’re in charge, on the expedition of a lifetime (literally!), how would you rate the professionals on your team? </p> <p> The best guides don't try to take over your expedition or insist there's only one route to the summit. They listen when you describe what you're experiencing along the trail. </p> <p> Here are qualities that I look for when assembling my health team. </p> <ul> <li> Professional competence and multidisciplinary perspective (results and raving fan clients, with no silos, no single body part experts) </li> <li> A focus on me and total personalization to my unique needs, preferences, and desires (this includes emotional connection) </li> <li> Communication and accessibility (trust is essential) </li> <li> An integration mindset and willingness to collaborate (if you’re on my team, you’ve got to be able to keep up with me, my knowledge and skills, and be open to new ideas) </li> <li> Living in integrity and amazing health (my high standards for my team are legendary) </li> <li> Growth mindset and humility (be willing to be challenged, learn, and seek answers everywhere, especially outside of your primary discipline; it’s what I do, and what I expect from my team) </li> </ul> <p> Although I use bioenergetic testing regularly for my own health, I rely on others for help. I need to know!” I’d been covering something up for years, not wanting to face reality. For nearly 25 years, I ignored an inherent part of who I am, and now today, it’s one of my more distinctive attributes. </p> <p> Is there something in your health that you’re covering up, something that you don’t want to face? Maybe, like me, there’s societal pressure to cover up and not show reality. </p> <p> Health issues that linger over time are, in a best-case scenario, annoying and draining, and in a worst-case scenario, painful, restrictive, and life-altering. After nearly 25 years of coloring my premature graying hair, I had no idea what color it was. But, there was a stubborn white streak in the front that resisted color. At one point, I actually believed that eating six small meals each day was the way to go. If not that, then three solid meals and two snacks. Often, dessert too! I loved the label that I found, calling myself a ‘grazer,’ and eating all day long. </p> <p> Before you scroll on to something else, thinking that I’m going to tell you how to eat (I’m not), I want you to know where I started – oblivious to how my body works, and with no knowledge of the impact of when and what I ate. </p> <p> Here’s what I know now: when I eat, as well as what I eat, has implications far beyond body weight and optimal nutrition. More than a decade ago, I discovered how the timing of eating affected my sleep. Late night meals or snacks ruin sleep. Fixing that was easy, and changing dinner time improved my sleep. </p> <p> But this one is even bigger. In the past several years, I’ve focused on the impact of eating on hormones. It goes beyond estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. It starts with the hormones oxytocin, cortisol, and insulin. When and what we eat affects the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands. Oh, and the liver too! </p> <p> <u>What</u> you eat impacts insulin. If what you are eating requires lots of insulin, it disrupts the balance of the other hormones. If what you are eating taxes the gut or the liver, that impacts their roles in hormone metabolization. </p> <p> <u>When</u> you eat impacts your hormone balance too.
