The 3 Fundamentals of Everyday Health (Before Any Supplement)

by Beth Mielbrecht | Aug 29, 2026

To me, health is fun. I have a body. I want to know how it works, and I want to feel good every day.

Some people tell me that sounds like a lot of work. Others take the "everything in moderation" approach, which often means health becomes something you do only if you feel like it that day.

I see it differently. Every day is a good day to take care of yourself.

Make Healthy Choices Your Default

I've built a life where healthy choices are the default. They happen automatically, without requiring a new decision each morning.

We eat dinner at home. We pack food for car trips instead of relying on whatever's at the next exit. I’m outside every day, no matter the weather (although sometimes only briefly during those extra windy frigid winter days).

From Hamburger Helper to CSA Shares

It took years to get here, one choice at a time. I'm a child of the 1970s. I ate my share of Hamburger Helper, Wonder Bread, and vegetables that came frozen in a plastic bag with cheese sauce already mixed in. My habits shifted gradually as I learned more. Now I support multiple local farms through CSA shares, and I talk to my farmer every week.

These are the 3 Fundamentals I live by, and they come before any supplement, trend, or advanced practice.

Fundamental 1: Keep the Garbage Out

Step 1 is to keep the garbage out. Food matters, but so does everything else you take in, through your eyes, your ears, your skin. That includes processed foods, of course, but also toxic media, draining relationships, and fake scents. No supplement can compensate for a daily serving of garbage.

Fundamental 2: Eat Real Food and Take In Beauty

Step 2 is eating real food and taking in beauty. Nourish yourself with nutrient-dense whole foods. Listen to music that moves you. Have conversations that matter. Watch a sunset. Your body responds to what you feed it, physically and emotionally.

Fundamental 3: Help Your Body Eliminate

Step 3 is helping your body eliminate. Your bowels need to move daily. Sweat, either in the summer heat or in a sauna, or dry brush your skin. Move your body so that what needs to leave has a way out.

Fundamentals First, Everything Else Second

Skip these fundamentals, and everything else you try is just busyness.

Which of these three do you need to focus on right now?
