Women come to me wanting to quit all kinds of things. One reaches for her vape in between meetings. Another pours a second glass of wine at the end of each day. Someone else reaches for sweets daily in the afternoon. Another checks her phone every few minutes, making the rounds through unimportant notifications.
Every Habit Is Doing a Job
Each habit is doing the same job. It is managing a stress that feels so uncomfortable; anything would be better.
My Own Not-So-Great Coping Tool
I know this feeling. Chocolate is my not-so-great stress management tool. In the mornings, I love herbal tea with a square of dark chocolate, and it’s a delicious treat. If I’m not paying attention, when I’m at my computer, tending to emails and action items, that one square becomes half a bar, all before 9 am.
Everyone wants it gone instantly, without any uncomfortable feelings attached, when they're finally ready to stop. There’s a reason for the behavior, and it’s usually an old emotional pattern.
What Surfaces When the Habit Stops
One woman counts her wins day by day, and for a while, that is success. Then, the emotions she has been pushing aside for years start surfacing. Without the habit, the old emotion starts showing up in unexpected moments.
One woman doesn't want to feel any of it. There isn't time for it in her schedule.
Another gives herself grace, because she understands those feelings are part of the process, not a setback from it.
Tools for Releasing What's Underneath
Whatever the habit, we use EFT tapping, diaphragmatic breathing, havening, and other nervous system tools, alongside her own custom homeopathic remedy, to move through what her body is ready to let go of.
The Takeaway: The Habit Was Covering Something
Here's what I want you to take from this. Removing a coping habit doesn't remove what the habit was covering. The feelings underneath don't disappear just because the behavior does. They surface, often at the exact moment you feel like you finally have things under control.
It's your body finally getting the chance to release what it's been carrying.
Is there a habit you rely on to avoid feeling something underneath it?
Your body wants to heal. Ask, listen, and take action.
