Why More Health Data Won’t Help You Heal

I test as a way of life. In college, I added a full extra year to find out firsthand where I did my best work as an engineer.

One of my co-op jobs involved me working in front of a giant box monitor, using early days 3D modeling software to rotate gyroscope parts for a satellite on the screen. The design was really interesting. And it was just a cartoon. Someone else would build it. I would never see it come together.

The job at the machine shop was different.

I wired control sensors while the noise of the shop carried on around me. I used multistrand cabling in dozens of color combinations, each one connecting to exactly the right place. When something was wrong, the system stopped. I found it. Fixed it. Then everything moved again.

Your Symptoms Are Signals, Not Problems

Your body has the same internal wiring. When something gets crossed, blocked, or stuck, a process breaks down. The symptom showing up is not the problem. It is the signal that something in the system needs attention.

Why I Threw Out My Oura Ring

I learned this lesson again many years ago with my own sleep. I was waking in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back to sleep. I tried a first-generation Oura ring to track my sleep data. It was interesting for a while, until it made me frustrated. Getting a low score without knowing why, without knowing what my body specifically needed, was not useful.
